City crews started work this week to install a new crosswalk on Tyner Boulevard at the Baker Road/Gannett Road intersection.

The new crosswalk will be a “rectangular rapid flashing beacon” design. This means that, in addition to the standard crosswalk pavement markings and signage, the new crosswalk will allow pedestrians to push a button to activate flashing lights to further alert motorists to the presence of pedestrians at the crossing. The project is scheduled to be completed by July.

The crosswalk was identified as a high priority as part of the city’s pedestrian crossing strategy, which was received by council in 2020. The strategy can be found on the city website.

The pedestrian crossing strategy provides a prioritization plan to implement pedestrian crossings as prescribed by the updated pedestrian crossing control guide by the Transportation Association of Canada. Out of the 202 city crosswalks evaluated as part of the strategy, 43 crossings were recommended for upgrade or installation, with 26 of these being existing crosswalks, and 17 the addition of new crosswalks.
