City of Prince George receives two 2021 community leadership awards

During the North Central Local Government Association’s (NCLGA) recent annual general meeting and convention, the City of Prince George was recognized as the 2021 Community Leadership Award winner for its work to enhance economic development and social responsibility in the community.

“Local governments in north central BC consistently demonstrate leadership in improving the economic prosperity, sustainability and resiliency of their communities,” said NCLGA Past President Sarrah Storey, in a news release. “The initiatives celebrated with this year’s awards are a testament to this leadership.”

The City of Prince George won the award in the Economic Development category for its Titans’ Den competition. The competition supported start up entrepreneurs in accessing funding that would enable them to launch their start up business idea. Similar to the show Dragons Den, participants pitched ideas to potential investors.

However, in this competition, Titans offered seed funding to entrepreneurs with no requirement for an ownership share or return on investment. Five of the nine participants at the live competition event were awarded a total of $9,850 in funding from the Titans.

“Through this competition, the city has connected successful entrepreneurs with the next generation of business leaders in the community, and facilitated the exchange of great business ideas and funding,” said Mayor Lyn Hall.

The City of Prince George also received the award in the Social Responsibility category for the Community Safety Hub. The city led this multi-sectoral initiative, which provides flexible work and meeting space for allied social service agencies to support service coordination and integration. In addition to the City of Prince George, many agencies including BC Housing, Northern Health, the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, and those comprising the RCMP’s Situation Table will work from the site to contribute to the creation of a clean, safe, and inclusive downtown for everyone.

“The Community Safety Hub is an innovative approach to coordinating services and an important component in enhancing the health and safety of individuals in our community,” said Hall.
