Spruce Kings blow lead late; lose to Chiefs in shootout

The Prince George Spruce Kings were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead as two late Chilliwack Chief goals and a shootout winner ended up being the difference as the Spruce Kings fell 3-2 to Chilliwack in a shootout.

Zach Gabruch got the puck at the blue line from Corey Cunningham and wristed it through traffic to give the Spruce Kings the lead late in the first. Gabruch’s first as a Spruce King came at 17:43 of the opening frame.

Off an offensive zone faceoff, in the second period, a Colton Cameron wrist shot from the left point was tipped by John Herrington and past Mathieu Caron to double the Spruce Kings lead. Herrington’s third in the pod came from Cameron at 3:23 of the second period.

At 16:18 of the period, Trevor Longo was able to find a hole in the Spruce Kings defence and took the puck to the goal and fired it by Trotter to put Chilliwack within one. Longo’s fourth of the pod was assisted by Ethan Bowen.

Not even two minutes later on a Chilliwack powerplay, Tanner Andrew had all sorts of time in the slot and fired the puck past Trotter to tie the game at two. Andrew’s sixth of the pod season was assisted by Jackson Munro at 18:10.

Overtime solved nothing, so the game went to a shootout.
