On April 7, at approximately 8 p.m., officers of the Dawson Creek RCMP were on patrol when they conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle associated to a person whom they believed to have outstanding warrants for his arrest. As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect was identified as a passenger and was confirmed to have outstanding arrest warrants.
Upon being informed that he was under arrest; and after several requests for him to exit the vehicle, the suspect put the vehicle into drive and directed the driver to flee while pressing down on the driver’s foot. The vehicle accelerated away quickly but crashed into a police vehicle which had just arrived on scene to assist and was parked at the time of the collision. The suspect was then taken into custody by the officers.
The damage to the police vehicle was extensive with the occupying officer being sent to the hospital with injuries. Both the suspect and driver were taken into custody.
In addition to his outstanding warrants; Tyrell Giroux, is now charged with
- Failing to Stop for Police
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
- Resisting Arrest
- Driving while Prohibited x2
Giroux was held and remanded into custody. The involved driver of the vehicle was released with no charges.
The involved officer was treated at the hospital and has since returned to operational duties.
