Backcountry skier killed in avalanche near Valemount

The body of a 35-year-old Fernie man was recovered from an avalanche debris field near Valemount Wednesday.

The man was one of a group three backcountry skiers. Two of the skiers were able to free themselves but the third could not be located.

He was located by a Robson Valley Search and Rescue team.

The class 3.5 avalanche occurred in the Swift Creek valley just north of Valemount, at 2:55 p.m. on February 23. Emergency Services were notified immediately by one of the survivors activating an InReach satellite communication device. The two survivors are not injured.

The BC Coroner Service has assumed conduct of the investigation. There is no further information at this time.
