Hatchet-wielding robbery suspect arrested

Police acted quickly to a report of a robbery at the Shoppers Drug Mart at 3055 Massey Drive Tuesday and apprehended a suspect within minutes.

The call came in at 9:40 a.m. Witnesses told police that a man and woman left the business with a basket full of items. When a security guard confronted the male suspect, he brandished a hatchet at the security guard and then left the area with the woman, crossing Highway 97 and leaving the shopping complex.

“Within 10 minutes of police receiving the report, frontline members had the male suspect in custody,” said Const. Jennifer Cooper, media spokesperson for the Prince George RCMP. “Two minutes later police arrested the female suspect, as well. Prince George RCMP’s Police Dog Service team attended to assist in backtracking where the male suspect traveled and quickly located the discarded hatchet used in the robbery.”

Police transported the man to the Prince George RCMP detachment where he remained until Court on Wednesday. Police are recommending charges of robbery and resisting arrest to the B.C. Prosecution Service. The suspect was also breaching two of his court ordered conditions. Police released the female without charges.

This file remains under investigation.
