Six Day for Social Justice starts today in Prince George

Today is Day 1 of Six Days for Social Justice and there events and activities planned right here in Prince George – virtually, of course.

“We’re inviting everyone in Prince George to engage virtually in the Six Days of Justice activities,” said Kathie Scouten, one of the organizers. “We’re hoping what we have planned will bring connection around social justice issues that are real and present here in Prince George.”

Six Days For Social Justice is being presented by Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and they are inviting the entire community to participate.

“With the pandemic, we’ve been largely confined to our homes and the way we normally experience community have been disrupted,” she said. “Also, this is a time a lot of us are concerned about the forces of intolerance and dehumanizing attitudes that are creeping into the mainstream. So we really want to open this up to the community.”

The idea stems from the church moving forward to becoming an affirming congregation to the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

There are two components to the week’s activities. The church has made up kits with origami paper, meditational booklet, tea lights and sticker. Each kit is themed around six social justice colour for each day at matched with a rainbow colour. You can pick up a kit at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church this week on Monday between 5:30–8 p.m.; Tuesday or Friday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. or Saturday 9 a.m. – noon.

You can also create your own kit if you don’t live nearby. You need tea lights, paper (6 colours if you have them) and the digital booklet which will be available in the website early next week.

The second component is our musical meditation aka Taiza each of the six nights at 7:15 p.m.

“Fleming Blishen, of Our Saviour’s, will read a short 15-minute Taiza service on Facebook Live around that particular issue,” said Scouten.

It is a chance to stop, reflect on the days issue and listen.

The day’s issues will be:

Monday – Affirming Spaces LGBTQIA2S+

Tuesday – Reconciliation/Racism/Refugees
