The Barkerville Highway was shutdown for several hours while the police investigated a motor vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a pedestrian Tuesday.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the Quesnel RCMP responded to single vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. A privately-owned sand truck was traveling east on the Barkerville Highway and struck a pedestrian who was walking eastbound near Drummond Road. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“At the time of the accident, the roads were wet due to a light rain and there was no artificial lighting,” said Sgt. Richard Weseen, of the Quesnel RCMP. “
Witnesses reported that they had to swerve to avoid the female just prior to the collision.”
The highway was detoured onto Schemenauer Road for approximately four hours while the police completed their investigation.
The pedestrian was a 34-year-old Quesnel resident and her name is not being released. The driver of the sand truck was not injured and alcohol and speed are not believed to be a factor in the incident.
