Trent Derrick is the new chair of the School District 57 board of education.
Derrick, who was vice-chair last year, was elected to the position at the board’s meeting Tuesday. He was nominated by trustee Shuirose Valimohamed and beat out Sharel Warrington, who was nominated by Ron Polillo.
Valimohamed was subsequently elected vice-chair after beating Polillo in a vote.
Tim Bennett, who has been chair for the past four years, announced last week he was not going to let his name stand.
Later in the meeting the board agreed to support a Lheidli T’enneh and McLeod Lake Indian Band request to increase the board to nine members with the two new positions being allocated to the two bands.
The board will write a letter to the minister of education, who will decide whether to increase the size of the board and whether to allocate those positions as indigenous positions.
