Former Prince George Free Press publisher Lorne Doerksen is seeking the B.C. Liberal Party nomination in Cariboo-Chilcotin.

Current MLA Donna Barnett, who has represented the riding since 2009, announced earlier this year that she will not be seeking re-election.

“It is with much thought and consideration to so many parts of my life that this decision has been made,” the Williams Lake resident said in a Facebook post announcing his candidacy. It will be a long road but eventually I hope to ask for your vote to become the MLA for the Cariboo Chilcotin. This is out of a love for the riding and all that is in it. A love of community service.”
Doerksen left Prince George to take over the publisher’s job at the Williams Lake Tribune more than 15 years ago. He is now a consultant at IG Wealth Management.
“Many of you have watched as we have raised our family here and had successful working and business careers,” he said in his announcement. “I love it here and certainly want to do my very best to represent it and to help it flourish … If the people of the Cariboo Chilcotin select me to represent the BC Liberals – I would be beyond pleased and will do my very best to follow behind the incredible Donna Barnett who has been an unbelievable representative of the region.”
Doerksen is the only candidate to declare so far.
