Kayaker missing on Willow River found safe

A missing kayaker was found alive and well this morning after spending a night in bush near Willow River.

Prince George RCMP received the call about the missing man at about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Two men had set out to kayak a portion of the Willow River Tuesday afternoon.  The planned route was an approximate 30-kilometre stretch ending where the river intersects Highway 16.  One of the kayakers failed to arrive at this location.

Frontline members of the Prince George RCMP attended the scene and began efforts to locate the man.  Emergency Management BC was contacted and the Prince George Search and Rescue Society (PGSAR) were mobilized.  Officers continued patrols throughout the night.  PGSAR and the RCMP’s Air 3 helicopter began search efforts at first light.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., personnel onboard the RCMP’s Air 3 helicopter located the man alive.  Although he appears to have no major injuries, he was airlifted to meet with paramedics to be medically assessed.

This incident should be a reminder to the public that our river systems are very high and very fast moving, say police.  All water activities on rivers is in our area are discouraged.  If persons choose to participate in activities on rivers in our area, all precautions, especially life jackets, should be taken.
