Council OKs variance for six-storey hotel on Recplace Drive

City council last week approved a variance permit that will allow the construction of a six-story hotel at 3030 Recplace Drive.

Braemar Developments is proposing to build a 110 unit Marriott TownePlace Suites hotel on the property, located between the Sandman Hotel and River Point. The variance permit will allow for a building height of 24 metres, rather than the 16 metres currently allowed.

In a submission to council, Brandon Hazard of Braemar Developments said due to the small size of the parcel of land, the increased height will be needed in order for the hotel to be viable.

All suites are extended stay kitchenette units. Featured amenities include a swim area (hot tub, pool, waterslide and some kid play structures to be determined), two meeting rooms, 1,000 square foot fitness center for guest use only.

“Marriott has some of the most stringent design standards and quality control in the industry so the project will be first class in all facets of the construction process,” he said.
