Officer assaulted while arresting break and enter suspect

An RCMP officer is recovering from a broken hand after being assaulted by a man with a crutch Wednesday.

Just after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday the RCMP received a report of an attempted break and enter to a residence in the 600-block of Ahbau Street in Prince George.  The suspect fled the scene before police were called.

Officers attended the area.  One officer was directed towards a suspect by a witness near the Spruceland Mall.  The officer confronted the suspect and attempted to arrest him.  The suspect assaulted the officer with a crutch and fled across Highway 97 on foot.

Several minutes later, the suspect was located in the bathroom of a restaurant on Central Street near Fifth Avenue.  The same officer attempted to arrest the suspect, and was again assaulted.  Other officers assisted and the suspect was taken into custody.

A 21-year-old Prince George man was held in custody overnight and will appear in court later today, pending charge approval.
