The Board of Education for School District 57 will receive a summary report of the Kelly Road Secondary School renaming tonight. The meeting will be available for public viewing via livestream, starting at 6 p.m. on the School District No. 57 website (sd57.bc.ca).
An executive summary from the online and paper questionnaire will be shared with trustees, along with data from closed questions and verbatim responses to open-ended questions. The information will be posted on the district website for public review.
“We appreciate that this is a highly anticipated stage in the engagement process,” said Board Chair Tim Bennett, in a news release. “It is for board trustees, as well. We have seen and received so much direct feedback, from public protest to heartfelt emails, and we are eager to see some of the trends and themes in the data from this questionnaire.”
The questionnaire was established to gather public feedback on the naming of the new school building that replaces the existing Kelly Road Secondary School in September 2020. Information was collected online, through printed copy and dedicated phone lines between March 20 and April 17, 2020.
Face-to-face public forums that had originally been planned were cancelled because of the social distancing strategy implemented by the Provincial Health Officer in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has been a challenging engagement process, largely due to circumstances outside of our control, and we anticipate that this decision will help us move forward together,” Bennett said. “Students, staff and the community will have a new state-of-the-art learning facility by September 2020, and it’s time to embrace the collective opportunities ahead of us.”
The School District 57 Board of Education will make a final decision regarding the name of the new school building at its regular public meeting on April 28.
