“This is the time of year when we see a lot of people coming to our landfills and transfer stations loaded up with waste from their spring cleaning projects,” said Laura Zapotichny, Manager of Waste Diversion Programs with the regional district.
For the health and safety of staff and visitors related to COVID-19, the regional district has implemented physical distancing protocols at its sites and that means less people allowed access at one time.
“We recognize this will mean long wait times, but we are asking the public for its patience and cooperation. When it comes to measures to keep everyone safe from COVID-19, we must be all in this together,” says Zapotichny.
To further limit traffic at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill, the regional district is suspending all sales of Norgrow compost until further notice.
The regional district is also reminding the public of the following:
- Most landfills and transfer stations will be closed on Good Friday.
- Avoid unnecessary trips to the landfill or transfer station. Items like old fridges, tires, yard waste and waste that doesn’t require immediate disposal, please hang onto it for now.
- Social and physical distancing is mandatory at all Regional District sites.
- Pay with credit or debit where available. If not, exact change is appreciated.
“We know it will be a very busy weekend for us, with long waiting lines at many of our facilities,” Zapotichny said. “But we are hopeful with the public’s cooperation we will manage through these challenging times.”
