City closing all civic playgrounds and recreation facilities, but parks and trails remain open

The City of Prince George is closing civic playgrounds and fenced dog parks and will not be re-opening recreation facilities such as Masich Place Stadium, sport fields and ball diamonds, skate parks, and hard surface courts until at least May 30 due to the on-going Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This action is being taken effective immediately and aligns with current Provincial Public Health guidelines relating to social (physical) distancing and orders limiting public gatherings.

Signs are being placed at the affected facilities to indicate their closure. Additional closures may be added and/or closures may be extended past May 30 if the situation relating to the pandemic, such as Provincial Public Health Orders, warrants it.

The city will not be taking bookings for outdoor civic facilities, parks, or sports fields such as the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Pavilion and Bandshell, Masich Place Stadium, Connaught Hill, and Rainbow Park Gazebo for use prior to May 30. Bookings that had been made for April and May have been cancelled and user groups have been notified. The city will notify user groups and the public when bookings will once again be accepted.

The gates providing vehicle access to Connaught Hill and Nechako Riverside Park will remain closed until May 30.

Parks and trails that allow for adequate physical distancing will remain open for the community to enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of green spaces. The majority of the city’s parks, including Cottonwood Island, Ferguson Lake, and Forests for the World will remain open with social/physical distancing guidelines in place and related signage on site.

All visitors to city parks and trails must exercise physical distancing per the directions from the Chief Provincial Health Officer. Last week, the City started to install signs at City parks and trails about the importance of social distancing.
