Woodside shines with 24 saves as Spruce Kings down West Kelowna

Corey Cunningham scored his 22nd of the season and his fifth goal in four games, and Carter Woodside made 24 saves to give the Spruce Kings a 3-1 victory on over the West Kelowna Warriors Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

“I thought our details were a little bit better tonight and I thought we played a lot of energy,” said Spruce Kings Associate Coach Colin Minardi. “Obviously it is a big win for our group, but it’s also nice to wrap up the trip on a positive note.”

1st Period:

PG: Corey Cunningham got the puck on the power-play after an Evan Orr point shot. Cunningham was able to get the rebound and fire it past Warriors goaltender Johnny Derrick to give the Spruce Kings the lead. Evan Orr and Haydn Delorme were credited with the helpers at 5:01 of the first.

2nd Period:

WK: At 5:20 of the second, Brendan Pigeon got a feed from Tyler Cristall and slid through the legs of Woodside to tie the game up at one. Cristall and John Evans had the assists on Pigeon’s seventh of the season.

PG: Off a lucky bounce off the end boards, the puck shot right to forward Mason Reeves in the high slot and hammered a slap shot top corner on Derrick to give the Spruce Kings a 2-1 lead. Reeves’ third of the year came unassisted just over a minute after the Pigeon tally.
