Cariboo Cougars open Mac’s tourney with a win

John Herrington and the Cariboo Cougars started the Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament with a dominant performance against the Airdrie CFR Bisons on Thursday in Calgary.

Herrington, the Cariboo captain, scored four consecutive goals in a 7-2 victory and was later named his team’s player of the game. The Cougars outshot the Bisons 44-23.

Cariboo forward Nico Myatovic had the only goal of the first period, on a power play. In the second, Herrington connected for the natural hat trick and then added another goal before the buzzer sent the teams to the dressing rooms. At that point, the Cougars were up 5-1 and were outshooting the Bisons 31-16.

In the third, Alex Ochitwa and Carter Yarish added to the Cariboo total. In the nets, Kenny Gerow earned the victory.

The Cats will look to move to 2-0 when they take on the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night.

The Cougars were Mac’s champions in 2015.
