UNBC and faculty association agree to binding arbitration

The special mediator, appointed by the province to help UNBC and the UNBC Faculty Association reach a collective agreement, has recommended a “final offer selection arbitration” process.

The process is designed to address a number of items, most notably the differences between the teams’ proposed compensation structures. The faculty association went on strike November 3 and remained on the picket lines until November 29.

The parties have 10 days to accept or reject the recommendations. The university has agreed to all of the recommendations in the special mediator’s report, according to an update on the university’s website. The faculty association has also indicated its agreement and job action will cease.

Now the two sides must agree to a third-party arbitrator by the end of business day on Jan. 3, 2020.

The hearing process is to start by Feb. 1, 2020 unless the parties mutually agree to extend that deadline.
