Cougars Call Up Dowhaniuk, Ziemmer ahead of weekend series in Portland

The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club has called up defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk (’04) from OHA Edmonton in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL), and forward Koehn Ziemmer (’04) from the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Midget Hockey League (AMHL), the team announced today.

Both are expected to make their Western Hockey League (WHL) regular season debuts this weekend against the Portland Winterhawks. Dowhaniuk and Ziemmer were drafted in the first-round in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. Dowhaniuk was selected third overall and Ziemmer fourth.

Dowhaniuk is playing at the Midget Prep level with OHA Edmonton and is the top scoring defencemen on his team with 12 points (3-19-12) in 18 games. Last season, at the Bantam Prep level, he was named the CSSHL Top Defenceman after posting 35 points (8-27-35) in 24 games. He was on Team Alberta at the 2019 WHL Cup in October where he tallied three assists in five games, and he also named an All-Star at the 2019 Alberta Cup last April. The Sherwood Park, AB product did play in four exhibition games in September, including the Cougars’ two games in Dawson Creek, BC against the Edmonton Oil Kings.


Ziemmer is playing Major Midget hockey with the St. Albert Raiders, after playing with Dowhaniuk at OHA Edmonton last season. With the Raiders, Ziemmer leads his team in both goals (10) and points (16) through 15 games. Last season, The Mayerthorpe, AB native led OHA Edmonton in scoring, as he compiled 76 points (37g-39a) in just 29 games and finished second overall in scoring in the CSSHL Bantam Prep Division. Ziemmer played with Dowhaniuk on Team Alberta at the 2019 WHL Cup in October. Ziemmer he too saw action in the pre-season dressing in dressing in three games back in September.

Dowhaniuk will wear number 24 and Ziemmer will wear number 13 with the Cougars.

The Cougars are back in action Saturday December 7, as they take on the Portland Winterhawks at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The puck drops at 6:00 pm as it’s the Winterhawks’ annual Teddy Bear Toss.
