Northern Hardware closing its doors

The iconic Northern Hardware is closing its doors.

The store opened in 1919 and has been operating in the city since then. Kelly Green, store president, has attributed the closure to a variety of reasons such as competition from big box stores, online shopping, and fewer people shopping downtown.

Green is the fourth generation of the Moffat family to operate the store, which was created by Alex Moffat and Frank Whitmore. Harold Moffat, also a former city mayor, ran the store, as did Ted Moffat before Green took over in 2013.

The Northern will have a customer appreciation day December 7, and start liquidating stock in the New Year. About 30 employees will be affected.

Also on Wednesday, Lowe’s Canada announced it will be closing its Prince George store.
