Mayor gets colourful announcing new Cirque du Soleil show coming to city

Lyn Hall proved to be a colourful mayor Tuesday – literally.

His all-white suit, with him inside it, was offered up as a blank palette for Pinewood Elementary students who gleefully picked up paintbrushes and turned that mayoral palette into a dizzying array of colours.

It was all done to announce Cirque du Soleil’s latest show Axel, about a young graphic artist hence the art work, is coming to Prince George next year. It’s a new Cirque show with the first performance last month in Florida. The world premiere will be in Montreal in December.

“Prince George will be one of the first cities on the planet to host this show,” said Hall, in announcing the show. “The last time Cirque was in Prince George, just over 17,000 tickets were sold, more than one-third of those tickets were for people who live outside the city. So … get your tickets early as this event plans to be a truly amazing, magnificent week.”

He said the show is yet another world class event coming to the city of Prince George.

“Our city is certainly no stranger to hosting top notch events and entertainment,” Hall. “In fact, CN Centre is at the heart of many world class events that bring our community together and make Prince George the great place that it is to live.”

This will mark the second time in two years that Prince George is going to be a stop for one of Cirque’s brand new shows.

“Axel will be a phenomenal production,” said Glen Mikkelsen, CN Centre general manager. “There will be more than 20 trucks (of equipment), 100 members of cast and crew including performers from around the world.”

Since the show will be in June, CN Centre staff will have to put ice back into the arena for the show.

THE SHOW

Axel, a young graphic artist and musician, dives into his hand drawn universe as he falls in love with the captivating Lei. Together they jet off on a fast-moving quest to retrieve the stolen light from the supervillain Vï.  In this epic fantasy, graphic art and music intertwine to create the super charged world of AXEL.

In Cirque du Soleil AXEL, the music serves as a narrative thread guiding our characters and our audiences as they journey with Axel and Lei to discover that true love shines even brighter that the most radiant star. Ice skating extravaganza, impressive areal feats, pop music, and vibrant visuals create an energetic and immersive experience for the whole family.

This newest Cirque du Soleil creation brings a new look to the world of ice skating by introducing us to the discipline of freestyle skating.
