Cariboo Cougars sweep Vancouver Canadians

The Cariboo Cougars scored all their goals in the first period on the way to a 3-1 win against the Greater Vancouver Canadians on Sunday in Richmond.

The Cougars, who completed a weekend sweep of the Canadians in a B.C. Hockey Major Midget League doubleheader, got Sunday goals from Carter Yarish, Brennan Bott and Devan Minard. Yarish’s goal was his fifth in three games and team-leading ninth in 10 outings.

Gavin Bains scored the lone goal for the Canadians in the middle period.

In the nets, Cariboo goaltender Jordan Fairlie picked up his fifth win in six starts and lowered his goals-against average to 2.49. Justin Wagner took the loss for the Canadians.

The Cougars defeated the Canadians 1-0 on Saturday. Fairlie, a 16-year-old from Fort St. John, earned his first BCHMML shutout in that game and Yarish connected for the only goal.

On the season, the Cougars improved to 8-1-0-1 and the Canadians slipped to 2-9-0-1.

The Cats will now start preparing for home games this coming weekend against the league-leading Okanagan Rockets (11-0-0-1). The Cougars and Rockets will clash on Saturday and Sunday at Kin 1. Start times are 4:30 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. respectively.
