Alexander makes 37 saves as Spruce Kings edge Grizzlies 2-1

Goals from both Nolan Welsh and Nick Poisson, and backed up by Jett Alexander’s 37 saves was all that was needed as the Spruce Kings edged the Victoria Grizzlies.

In the opening frame, both teams had some Grade A chances, but both Alexander and Joe Howe were stellar. It took until 15:31 of the opening frame for Nick Poisson to score in his third straight game to give the Spruce Kings the lead. Chong Min Lee got the lone marker. The Spruce Kings hold a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second period, it was the captain Nolan Welsh who continues to deliver night in and night out, scoring his fourth of the year past Howe to give Prince George a 2-0 lead. Chong Min Lee got his second assist of the night as well. The Grizzlies had some great chances, but Alexander was sensational all night long and kept the Grizzlies frustrated after forty minutes.

In the final frame, Grizzlies forward Andrew Amousse wristed a shot under the arm of Alexander to get the Grizzlies within one. That Amousse marker came at 4:25 of the third period. Shortly after the goal, the Spruce Kings found themselves shorthanded. Some great efforts from the likes of Kolton Cousins, Mason Waite, and Corey Cunningham who were getting in passing lanes and blocking shots, were able to keep Victoria off the scoreboard on that man advantage. Victoria continued to pressure late in the game with the extra attacker out, but they were unable to solve Jett Alexander in the late going, leading the Spruce Kings to a 2-1 win.

Alexander says his club really needed this win moving forward, “This is a big one for us. I felt that we really deserved this one. We played a real good first and third period, the second I thought we played to more their style but I think we took the game over in the third period”.

Alexander also spoke towards his sensational performance tonight making 37 saves, “Me and Al (Alex Evin) are always taking about what I can do to be successful, and that is having calm feet and not getting too excited in the net, and I thought I did a better job not chasing pucks, kind of let the game come to me, and I think I am building and getting better as the games go on”.

Next up for the Spruce Kings are the Cowichan Valley Capitals in Duncan. That one is slated for a 2 p.m. puck drop. You can catch all of the action on HockeyTV and Mixlr. Pre game will be at 1:45 with play by play coming at 2.
