Overtime loss for Spruce Kings as Eagles win both weekend games

The Spruce Kings had a 3-2 lead late in the third, but a late goal by Brent Bliss tied the game, followed by Holden Katzalay burying the OT winner to defeat the Spruce Kings 4-3 as the Surrey Eagles took both games of the weekend series.

In the opening frame, the Eagles began the scoring early on a beautiful passing feed to find Christophe Tellier to put Surrey up a goal 13 seconds into the game. After a back and fourth period, it was the fourth line going to work for the Spruce Kings, as Jake McLean fired the puck past Eagles goaltender Cal Schell to tie the game at one.

In the second period, both teams again had great chances but Schell and Jett Alexander stood their ground. Adamo Santia at 13:51 put the Eagles ahead on a back door feed from Carter King. A few minutes later, Eagles defenseman Owen Nolan was called for a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a check from behind that put the Spruce Kings on a five-minute power play. Chong Min Lee went glove side on the man advantage to tie the game at two and got the RMCA on their feet.

At 3:52 into the third period, Brett Pfoh made absolutely no mistake going top shelf on a partial break to put the Spruce Kings up 3-2 early in the period. With eight minutes to go, Nick Poisson was charged with a blow to the head penalty where he had to serve a 10-minute misconduct. With less than 4 minutes to play, Brent Bliss fired a rocket from the blue line through traffic to tie the game at 3.

In the overtime frame, it was short lived as Holden Katzalay, buried it past Jett Alexander to give the Eagles a 4-3 win in overtime.

Spruce Kings forward Brett Pfoh says he was happy with his team’s effort and knows that things will get better.

“We were a lot better than we were last night, I think we are going to get better and I think it is just going to come with time,” he said.

The Spruce Kings home stand continues as they host the Victoria Grizzlies next Friday night followed by the Pentiction Vees on Saturday.
