They’re closing in on a million bucks.

With the $207,000 raised this year, the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North have raised $958,744.24 in the six years the cycling team has been raising money to fight cancer.

“I’m so very proud of this team,” said Karin Piche, who started the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North seven years ago with 35 riders. This year there were 81 riders who took part in the ride this past weekend.

“This was a record breaking year,” she said. “I can’t thank the community of Prince George and beyond enough for all of their support but, more importantly, saving lives.”

There were more than 2,100 riders, overall, in the Ride to Conquer Cancer and all the proceeds to to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

Mayor Lyn Hall was part of the support staff this year, helping out with the cyclists as they made the two-day, 250-kilometre journey.

“That was a tremendous experience,” Hall said. “Not just to see their commitment to the fundraising, commitment to the cause, but to see the entire group of riders who took part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer … I can’t wait until next year.”
