9-1-1 call causes crash on Hart Highway

A driver calling 9-1-1 appears to be the cause of a two-vehicle crash on the Hart Highway this morning.

Emergency crews were called out just before 6 a.m. to a report of a collision between a tractor trailer and a truck on Highway 97 (Hart Highway) near Wall Road in Prince George.  No serious injuries were reported.

The investigation found that a south bound pickup truck served into the north bound lane in front of a tractor trailer unit traveling at highway speed.  The driver of the unloaded tractor trailer managed to swerve into the north bound shoulder to avoid a head on collision.  The pickup side swiped the tractor trailer.

Investigators have learned that the pickup driver was in the process of dialling 9-1-1 in relation to another incident when he drifted into the oncoming lane putting himself and the other driver at risk.  Although the Motor Vehicle Act allows for drivers to use their device to call 9-1-1 while driving, this incident is a reminder to drivers that the best practice is to always pull over in a safe location to make a phone call, even in an emergency.

The pickup driver was issued a Motor Vehicle Act ticket for failing to keep right.
