Residents of Mackenzie are taking action to respond to the closure of the Canfor mill in Mackenzie, as well as the closure and curtailment of other forestry operations in the town and region. Local 18 of the Public and Private Workers of Canada, along with other local unions and businesses, is spearheading the organizing of a community rally on August 22 under the banner “MackenzieMatters.”
Mackenzie faced a similar challenging situation back in 2008. At that time, workers and the community came together to organize a large Save Our Community Rally, which was attended by people from across the region.
Peter Merkley, President of PPWC Local 18, says that the mill closures and curtailments are creating a domino effect which is impacting not only forestry workers but also other members of the community, including local businesses and services, as well as the region as a whole. He invites people from Mackenzie and across the region to attend the rally on August 22 to show their support and have their voices heard.
