IIO investigates in custody death in Prince George

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating the death of woman Saturday who was in custody in Prince George.

According to the office, Prince George RCMP reported that at 9:24 p.m. on July 19, a person was arrested for causing a disturbance. The individual was taken into custody.

On July 20, 2019 at 4:25 a.m., the person was observed in distress. Paramedics attended. The person was taken to hospital. At 6:46 a.m., hospital staff informed the RCMP that the person was deceased.

The IIO will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
