Two men arrested following ‘priority incident’

The ‘priority incident’ that resulted in the RCMP closing the Hart Highway earlier today turned out to be the arrest of two men in connection with a break and enter on Mountainview Road.

RCMP responded to a report of a residential alarm at about 9:45 a.m. on Mountainview Road, just off Chief Lake Road.

Officers confirmed that a break and enter had occurred and a firearm and ammunition had been stolen.  No suspects were on the property.

At approximately 11 a.m., officers located a suspect vehicle in the area of the break and enter.  The vehicle fled southbound on Highway 97.  Officers heading north on Highway 97 from the city centre, encountered the suspect vehicle near Knell Road.  Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and a collision occurred.  Two men fled the vehicle with at least one firearm.  Both were taken into custody a short time later.  A responding officer fired a shot during the incident, however no one was hurt.

This portion of Highway 97 remains closed as investigators gather evidence from the scene.

As a result of this incident, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) were contacted and briefed.  They will not be asserting jurisdiction.
