Beginning June 15, teens ages 13-18 can get a free YMCA teen summer membership at the YMCA of Northern BC’s Prince George Family Y. According to the 2016 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, only nine per cent of youth under age 18 get the recommended 60 minutes of active play each day, scoring a D- once again this year.
The report card links inactivity to poor and too little sleep, stating that 43 per cent of 16- and 17-year-olds are not getting enough sleep on weekdays.
The YMCA of Northern BC wants youth to be healthy and engaged in their community and believes health should be accessible to everyone. Thus the YMCA is taking action by offering a YMCA Teen Summer Membership for free to teens ages 13-18 to allow teens to stay safe and active this summer.
The YMCA of Northern BC is dedicated to promoting healthy living and helping children, families and seniors thrive.
“The YMCA believes strongly in the importance of building healthy communities,” said CEO Amanda Alexander. “Helping teens have access over the summer months will support teens in our community find a positive connection to exercise that could foster life-long connection to the importance of physical activity and health.”
The YMCA of Northern BC encourages youth to get active and meet new friends in a safe and welcoming community.
The YMCA Teen Summer Membership is available beginning June 26 and is valid until August 31. To sign-up, teens can visit the Prince George Family Y at 2020 Massey Drive with a parent or guardian and photo ID. Some restrictions apply, full details available at the membership centre.
