Northern Medical Program graduates 33 new doctors

The Northern Medical Program held a local celebration for its 12th graduating class, the Class of 2019.

At the celebration, the 33 graduating students received their wood shingle and their long white coat to mark their transition from students to doctors. These graduates now move into two to seven years of medical residency and fellowship training, depending on specialty.

The Class of 2019 includes 11 graduates from northern B.C., including eight from Prince George.

Fifteen of the graduates will be entering family medicine residency programs, with most training in rural and smaller centres in B.C. and across the country. Three of those graduates will train in Prince George. The remaining students have matched to a wide range of specialties including diagnostic radiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, physical medicine & rehabilitation, psychiatry, radiation oncology and urology.

The NMP graduation celebration precedes the formal graduation for the students, taking place at UBC on May 22, at which they will receive their official medical degrees.

The Northern Medical Program is a distributed program site of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), delivered in partnership with UNBC.
