Cozzi’s clutch performance gives him Player of the Week nod

Patrick Cozzi

Prince George Spruce Kings forward Patrick Cozzi has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 5, the league announced Monday.

Cozzi scored four goals and added one assist in three Doyle Cup games last week, leading the Spruce Kings to three straight victories and the team’s first-ever Doyle Cup championship.

In Game 4 on Wednesday, with Prince George trailing 2-1 in the series and the game tied at one, Cozzi scored the eventual game-winning goal late in the second period as the Spruce Kings beat the Brooks Bandits 3-1 to even up the series at two. He was named the game’s first star. The next night in Game 5, the 21-year-old from Greenlawn, N.J. doubled his output from the previous night, scoring the first and last goals of the game for Prince George in a 4-1 win and was given second-star honours. In Game 6 on Saturday with a chance to clinch the series, Cozzi continued his torrid pace, assisting on Ben Brar’s game-tying goal midway through the third period and adding a tally of his own, an empty-netter with 20 seconds to play which sealed the game, as the Spruce Kings won 4-2 for their third-straight win of the series to capture the Doyle Cup.

Cozzi finishes as the leading scorer in the series with four goals and two assists for six points in six games.
