Kelly Road, Heather Park affected as police deal with man nearby

Kelly Road Secondary School and Heather Park Elementary School were impacted earlier today as police dealt with a distraught man at a house nearby.

Police were called out at about 11:45 a.m. to a report of a man in “mental distress,” say police, at a residence on Handlen Road.  Firearms were believed to be involved.

Due to the proximity of Kelly Road Secondary School, RCMP directed school administration to initiate emergency procedures. Initially Kelly Road moved into a lockdown situation.

Neighbouring Heather Park Elementary School was directed to move into a shelter-in-place as a precautionary measure.

At 12:10 p.m. Kelly Road School moved into a hold-and-secure with students who had found themselves outside during lunch break being moved into the school.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., the man was apprehended by members of the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team without further incident.  The man was transported to hospital for treatment.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. the RCMP called an all clear for Kelly Road Secondary and Heather Park Elementary Schools. The day concluded with a regular dismissal.

The investigation is continuing and the school has been advised.
