The possibility of winning the jackpot is usually enough of a reason to attend the Prince George Cougars’ Mega 50/50 Jackpot Night.
But there are a lot more reasons to take in the game other than, of course, buying the winning 50/50 ticket. Firstly, you can take in some great WHL action as the Cougars take on the Portland Winterhawks. Secondly, as with all Mega 50/50 Jackpot nights, you will be helping a great local charity – the United Way. And thirdly, there will be a great tailgate party prior to the game marking a very special birthday where there will be more great giveaways.
It’s the final Prince George Cougars Society Mega 50/50 Jackpot Night of the season and the guaranteed jackpot is $15,000, courtesy of Wood Wheaton. The title sponsor for the night is Mr. Mikes.
“The Cougars are committed to being more than just a hockey team, but also an important part of the fabric of what makes Prince George a great place to live,” said Andy Beesley, Cougars Vice President of Business. “Along with countless community appearances and donations, through our 50/50 Society, the Cougars have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities over the past three-and-a-half years.”
The bigger the crowd, the bigger the Mega 50/50 Jackpot is, which means more money raised for the United Way of Northern B.C and local non-profit agencies.
“The sweet number for the arena is about 4,400 people, that’s when we’ll blow the ceiling off the 50/50 and it will be over $60,000 that someone will take home,” said Squire.
United Way raises money so “charities that do really good work on the ground, can keep doing good work on the ground and not have to worry about other fundraisers.”
Out of the 38 charities that the United Way funds in Prince George, nine of them are involved in the Mega 50/50 Jackpot Night. Charities benefiting include Intersect, PG Hospice, Crisis Line, YMCA, Canadian Mental Health, Northern Brain Injury Group/ PG Brain Injury, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Carney Hill Neighbourhood, and the United Way Community Impact Fund, which financially supported 28 other organizations in Prince George this year.
“It’s going to be a big impact,” said Squire.
The tailgate party, held before the game, is not only a fundraiser for the United Way as well, but it is fifth birthday party for Hell Yeah Prince George.
“We wanted to do something as a group of admins (for the Facebook page),” said co-creator David Mothus.
Consequently, the idea of a tailgate party was born. Treasure Cove Casino has donated tents for the event, Prince George Animal Rescue will have a petting zoo set up, there will be a DJ Service, Art of Magic will be doing some street magic, Mandy Paavola will be doing some face-painting, Royal LePage donated $2,000 in cash which will be given away in $5 amounts going towards the purchase of a Mega 50/50 Jackpot ticket, Save-On will be selling burgers and hotdogs, by donation, with proceeds going to the United Way.
“And then we have done something absolutely ridiculously stupid, which is going to be one of the most fun things ever and that is Dave Mothus and Scott McWalter (who created the Hell Yeah Prince George Page in 2014), are going auction off the right to pie us in the face,” said Mothus.
The auction will be held on the Hell Yeah Prince George Facebook page and auction will close March 4, so get your bids in.
In addition, if you attend the tailgate party and buy your Mega 50/50 Jackpot ticket there, you will be entered in a draw for a Google Home, a walkie-talkie set, and a wireless headset.
