Despite 30 points separating the two teams in the standings heading into Saturday’s game, it was another hard-fought battle between the division rivals. The Cougars came back from two, one-goal deficits before the Giants found the late game winner.
The Giants’ Justin Sourdif broke a 2-2 deadlock with five-minutes to go, sending the Cougars to their ninth-consecutive loss. Milos Roman added an empty-net goal inside the final minute of regulation. Roman also scored in the first period on the power-play and defenceman Dylan Plouffe had the other Giants’ goal. Trent Miner backstopped the Giants to the win, stopping 15 of 17 shots for his third win against Prince George.
Cole Moberg and Josh Maser scored in each of the first two periods for the Cougars. Isaiah DiLaura played well, despite the setback, turning aside 28 of 31 shots in the crease. If you exclude the empty-net goal, the last five games between the two teams have been decided by just one goal.
The Cougars will look for a measure of revenge against the Giants next week, as they return home to face them in a midweek double-header starting February 5th. Over the course of the next eight days, the two teams will meet four times.
