Bekkering says recruitment top issue facing school district

We asked all the School District 57 Board of Education candidates to fill out a questionnaire so you may get to know them a little better. We will be running their answers between now and election day.

Why are you running for trustee for School District 57?

I care passionately about education being a solution to so many of our worlds’ problems i.e.poverty, climate change, tolerance. I would like to be a part of providing the governance for for that progressive education to happen.

What do you think is the single most important issue facing School District 57?

Recruitment. I think getting the teachers’ wage at least in parity with the other provinces would be a good start!

What do you see as the main role of the School District 57 board of trustees?

Governance and policy creating and letting the superintendent use those policies to do their job!

Do you support the current sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) curriculum in schools? Why or why not?

Yes I do. It’s a part of our students learning process and they need to feel safe and supported and that can happen in a school environment.

How will you ensure that rural schools are adequately funded, and represented?

I will advocate for the rural schools report that was issued earlier this spring and I know the current Minister of Education is a supporter of rural schools and knows how important they are to keeping communities intact! I visited Giscome Elementary School recently and the community of Willow River and Giscome are so proud of their school! The multi use of the school as a community centre is brilliant!

If you have one pet project you would like to accomplish as a school trustee, what would that be?

To see more communication regarding the school district’s activities. It has become almost non-existent! I found it very sad that there was very little published or reported on regarding our high school graduations! It should be SD 57’s celebration of our students achieving 13 years of public school!

What do you bring to the board table that no other candidate does?

I bring a lifetime of being involved in education. I was part of a committee in Vancouver that worked to change the outdated PTA to PAC because we knew how important it was to give parents more input into their children’s education.

Recruitment and retention of teachers and support staff is an ongoing issue. What are your thoughts on ways to keep the district properly staffed?

Increase the wages for teachers! They currently are paid the lowest wages in the country!

How will you try to ensure public education funding for School District 57 increases?

Work with my fellow trustees and administration to advocate to the government to provide us with the funds needed.
