The Prince George Cougars won their home opener Friday, edging the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 at the CN Centre. Rookie forward Matéj Toman broke a 2-2 tie with just under nine-minutes left, sending over 3,100 fans into a frenzy, as the Cougars picked up their second-straight win over Kelowna.
Stingy Shot Clock: The Cougars surrendered just 21 shots on Friday, the least amount of shots they’ve yielded this season. The Rockets were held to eight-shots in the first period and just three in the second period. Friday night was the first time this season the Cougars outshot their opponent.
Quick Strike Offense:Ilijah Colina and Ethan Browne scored just 45-seconds apart in the first period, as the Cougars led 2-0 not even three-minutes into the game. The Rockets replied with two goals in just 52-seconds in the third period to tie the game 2-2, before Toman’s game-winner.
Czech Mate:Import forward and Czech native Matéj Toman scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period and was named the game’s second star. Toman’s goal was his first in the WHL. He was selected fifth overall in the 2018 CHL Import Draft.
