Royals notch shootout win over Cougars

It was a goaltending duel in Victoria, as Prince George Cougars goaltender Taylor Gauthier and Victoria Royals netminder Griffen Outhouse combined to stop 61 shots in regulation time. The Royals scored the only goal in the five-round shootout, as they picked up the extra point in the WHL regular season opener, downing the Cougars 2-1.

Taylor Gauthier and Griffen Outhouse were the stars Friday. The two goaltenders not only combined for 61 saves through overtime but they both had several highlight-reel stops. Taylor Gauthier made several spectacular saves, including an eye-popping, full extension, blocker-save on a Brandon Cutler breakaway attempt. Not to be outdone, Griffen Outhouse robbed Max Kryski on a breakaway in overtime with a sliding pad-save. Gauthier was named the game’s second star, whereas Outhouse was named first star.

Marathon Shootout: It took the tenth shooter, in the fifth-round, to decide a winner Friday night. Victoria’s Dino Kambeitz was the only player to score in the shootout. Ethan Browne, Vladislav Mikhalchuk, Max Kryski, Ilijah Colina and Tyson Upper all shot for the Cougars.

Missing on the Blue-line: Veteran defencemen Austin Crossley and Joel Lakusta both sat out Friday’s game due to suspension; both are eligible to return Saturday. Crossley served a one-game ban for a pre-season major penalty, and Lakusta served the final game of a three-game suspension he was handed late last season.

The two teams wrap up the weekend doubleheader Saturday night at 7:05 pm. Fans can listen to the game on 94.3 The GOAT, or they can watch WHL Live online.
