A Labour Day celebration and march is being organized in Prince George this year to which the entire community is invited. The festivities are scheduled to being at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 3 in Canada Games Plaza and will feature a short march through downtown, followed at noon by a celebration at the Plaza which will include speakers such including Aaron Ekman, Secretary Treasurer, BC Federation of labour, music, lots of free food, games for kids, display booths and other activities.
The Labour Day Organizing Committee and the North Central Labour Council (NCLC) are coordinating the event, along with local unions and other community organizations.
The theme for the festivities this year is Labour movement – past, present, future – fighting for the rights of all! The purpose is to highlight the vital role of labour in the community and the many contributions the labour movement has made to the betterment of all in society. At the same time, it has been organized so that everyone in the community – kids, adults, pensioners, and families – can come out to the Canada Games Plaza, have lots of fun, and enjoy some free food and entertainment. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends and family.
Food will consist of barbecued hotdogs, fruit, popcorn, juice, fudge, candy and other treats. Activities for kids include having fun with the inflatable bouncy castle, face painting, obstacle course, and games. Entertainment will include well-known local band Cottonwood and singer Kevin Hutchings.
Matt Baker, of the Labour Day Organizing Committee and North Central Labour Council, notes that last year, over 1,500 people attended the march and celebration. This year, the organizing is going very well and similar numbers are expected. So far, more than 30 unions and community organizations have come forward to sponsor or support. Baker says that people are looking forward to the event and it is becoming a tradition in the community.
