The University of Northern British Columbia’s Women’s soccer program has added a dose of playmaking, officially announcing the commitment of midfielder Jenna Wild for the 2018-2019 Canada West season.
Wild has spent the past two years studying at the University of Victoria. A visit to UNBC in early 2018, and the 20 year old knew the chance to play soccer at the Canada West level was one she couldn’t pass up.
“It means a lot. I didn’t know I would be up here at this time, but I am really excited to have this opportunity. To be able to train with these girls and with Neil.”
A native of Victoria, Wild played youth with a number of current Timberwolves, and was coached by UNBC bench boss Neil Sedgwick.
“I have heard it’s a really good program, and obviously with Neil up here, that was huge for me. When I was playing youth, it wasn’t about wins, it was about developing as players. I think he carries a lot of that to this team. I have a lot to grow in, so I felt really confident coming here.”
Sedgwick cites Wild’s ability to process the game, and make great decisions with the ball, as two of her finest qualities on the pitch.
“Jenna brings tremendous maturity and energy to our program. She has a very high soccer intelligence, and it allows her to find key spaces on the field that help us attack defenses. We are thrilled to have her.”
Wild has been participating in preseason training camp with her new teammates, in preparation for their season opener in September. Despite two years away from the game at a competitive level, she has looked right at home with the TWolves.
“The technical level is a lot higher, so I have work to do technically. The speed of play and tempo is a lot faster, which I like. It is played a lot on the ground, so I am looking forward to that.”
A 2016 graduate of Pacific Christian School, Wild will continue her studies towards a Bachelor of Arts at UNBC. Wild and the Timberwolves open their schedule September 8th at UBC Okanagan. She is ready to hit the pitch, and gave UNBC fans an idea of what they can expect from her in her time in green and gold.
“I have a good work ethic, and I try to raise the level of work ethic around me. I have good ball control, and I hope to see the field. I am super excited to learn a lot and work really hard.”
