Grief support and me

Prince George Hospice

Six months ago I stepped through the doors of the Hospice House and automatically felt at home. It was a new world of exciting opportunities and learning experiences to be had.

My name is Rebekah and I joined the Prince George Hospice Society family as a Grief Support Worker. My previous role as a Registered Nurse in Australia gave me the opportunity to help those in a clinical/medical capacity however, there was always a part that I felt was essentially ‘missing’.

Once I joined the team and found my feet in the role I found that missing link. It’s the ability to be present, engaging sometimes without words. I have learned that there is an art to silence. Sometimes helping someone with their grief is to just ‘be’.

To those I have had the honour of engaging with in their journey, I say thank you. Hospice has bought a new meaning to not just end of life but all the facets that surround it. I walk away feeling humbled and privileged to have been where I stood.
