Ottawa is dipping into the pockets of school trustees, so School District 57 trustees are dipping into the pockets of taxpayers to compensate.
For the second month in a row, trustees voted to increase their own remuneration. In February the board increased trustees’ stipend by 1.5 per cent. On Tuesday, it gave increases commensurate with the federal decision to eliminate the regulation allowing for one-third of trustees’ stipend to be tax-free.
The changes will move the board chair’s stipend to $21,200, the vice-chair’s stipend to $19,700 and trustee stipend to $18,200.
The move will cost the district $20,150 annually.
