Emotions ran high at the Prince George Hospice Society’s Bucket List Gala Friday as it was announced Dirk Finger would be able to cross a trip to Disney World off his bucket list.
Dirk, 47, and his wife Melissa, have two children Arabella, 5, who just started kindergarten and Daxton 14 months old. Dirk is a math teacher at College Heights secondary school
Dirk was diagnosed with cancer of his salivary gland last year in July, one month before the birth of his son. His cancer is very aggressive and he has had surgery to remove some of his lymph and salivary glands. His treatment included radiation and rounds of chemo.
In January, Dirk was feeling well and optimistic and there was hope that the cancer was gone. In March a follow up appointment revealed spots on his lungs. Again, Dirk underwent six rounds of chemo.
Three weeks ago, Dirk and Melissa were told that the medications were no longer able to cure his cancer. No further treatment options were available. Dirk is living with a terminal condition
Dirk and Melissa are on a journey of hope. Hope for memories, hope for more time, hope for an eventual treatment.
Thanks to Wood Wheaton Superstore, the Finger family will be heading off to Disney World to make some of those memories they’re hoping for.
The Bucket List initiative is designed to support the community in giving pause, and paying attention to what is important.
