Motorcyclist killed after being hit by SUV near Kitimat

A man has died following a motor vehicle accident north of Kitimat yesterday afternoon.

Around 4:15 p.m. September 14, police responded accident involving a motorcycle and SUV on Highway 37 at Oolichan Avenue.

A northbound SUV was attempting to turn left when an oncoming motorcycle collided with the vehicle. The motorcyclist, a Terrace man in his 70s, was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries just after 5 p.m. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV received minor injuries.

The highway was closed, then later traffic was routed around the crash while Kitimat RCMP, West Pacific Region Traffic Services, and ICARS collision reconstructionist members investigated.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

The accident is the second fatality involving motorcycles in northern B.C. in less than a week. A motorcyclist in Prince George died Friday after colliding with a minivan on the Hart Highway. That crash was the third in a matter of days in Prince George involving motorcycles.
