Dynamic veteran Jovan Leamy joins UNBC men’s basketball

The University of Northern British Columbia’s Men’s basketball program has added a heavy dose of athleticism and experience, announcing the transfer of Jovan Leamy from Ryerson University for the 2017-2018 season.
“One of my close friends, James Agyeman, introduced me to Coach Todd (Jordan). We built a relationship over the summer, and I decided Prince George and UNBC were the places for me,” said the six-foot-five Leamy. “It means a lot. This is my third school in three years. I definitely want to stay here and graduate, and build something great with this program.”
The native of Toronto, Ontario is well travelled, having spent the 2014-2015 season with Lindenwood University in Illinois, the 2015-2016 season with Williston State University in North Dakota, and the 2016-2017 year with Ryerson. Leamy hopes that experience benefits every member of the Timberwolves.
“I am still trying to learn, but I want to take more of a leadership role. I want to teach the young guys some of the do’s and don’ts of college basketball, especially the first years coming in,” he said. “Bringing the guys together, bringing a winning attitude, and helping us get some wins.”
Leamy appeared in just one game last season with the Rams, scoring 13 points. UNBC coach Todd Jordan says Leamy will add a crucial element to the Timberwolves approach at both ends of the floor.
“He is maybe the most athletic wing we have ever had play for us. He can get up and down, he is above the rim, and he really gets after it defensively,” said Jordan. “His defense will help us quite a bit, as he uses that length to get out in passing lanes.”
Leamy says his defensive intensity is a staple of his game.
“My defense fuels my offense. It makes it easier, not only for me, but for my team to get out on fast breaks, and get easy opportunities,” said Leamy. “I definitely take defense seriously.”
Coming out of secondary school, Leamy was rated one of the Top 100 Prospects in Canada by North Pole Hoops. The 23-year-old has been training with his new teammates in Prince George, and is impressed by the unity of the Timberwolves.
“We are one on the court. It definitely helps us be comfortable on the court and playing together,” he noted. “I think we shoot the ball well, we push the pace, run the floor, and we are definitely in good shape.”
Leamy will study business in his fourth year of U Sports eligibility, and has his eyes set on goals, both team-based and personal, for the 2017-2018 season.
“The team goal is definitely make playoffs, and my ultimate goal for these guys is to make it to Nationals,” he said. “Personally, I want to have a solid year, make a name for myself, and help put UNBC back on the map for basketball.”
