Prince George students heading back to classes next week will be spread out among more schools.
Springwood Elementary School is on track to re-open Tuesday, after being closed for seven years.
“I’m excited to start the school year, and looking forward to meeting Springwood students and families,” said Kelly Johansen, Springwood Elementary principal, in a press release. “A lot of planning and work has gone into preparing Springwood and now we finally get to move forward with the school year. All of the Springwood staff is eager to start and are busy getting things ready in the school for the September start up. enthusiasm and pride has been evident throughout the entire school opening process.”
The School District 57 Board of Education voted, in April, to re-open the school. The decision stems from the Supreme Court of Canada’s November 10, 2016 decision in the matter of British Columbia Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government. Subsequent to that ruling, an agreement was reached with the BCTF which mandates smaller classrooms in B.C. schools.
Approximately 190 students are registered to begin classes at Springwood Elementary on Wednesday, September 6. Teachers and school administration have prepared classrooms, organized new resources, set up the Learning Commons, ensured that information technology is ready to function and registered new students. Individual classrooms and the overall school building are beginning to look like the engaging and exciting learning environment envisioned.
The school district’s facilities services staff has completed work on the interior and exterior of the building. Painting, new flooring/matting, roof replacements, lighting, gymnasium floors, roof exhaust systems, walls, bathroom renovations, emergency lighting, electrical panels, shelving, sidewalks and handicap sidewalks/entrances have been completed during a busy summer.
Work on additional Springwood Elementary School projects will continue into the fall. Some electrical work, camera, smartboard technology installation, whiteboards, sound systems, bus lanes, fencing, and playgrounds are scheduled to be completed during September.
