Rustad gives update on fire situation

Forests Minister John Rustad posted the following update on B.C.’s wildfires on his Facebook page this afternoon:

We have 183 wildfires burning. We made good progress yesterday but there continues to be active and extreme fire behavior. To date there have been 612 fires burning more than 110,000 hectares costing more than $66 million.

Weather has helped again last night and into today however there is the potential for significant wind Sat/Sun which could pose a major challenge.

Here’s a brief update on some of the significant fires:
Ashcroft: 11,500ha
Princeton: 3,000ha
Gustafsen: 5,000ha
Wildwood: 2,500ha
Hanceville Complex: 10,000ha
Little Fort: 1,400ha at Dunn Lake and 440ha for Thuya Lake

We have about 3,200 personnel working across the province (ministry people and contractors) including about 400 from other provinces. 178 aircraft are deployed providing support to our ground crews.

Approximately 14,400 people have been evacuated.
