Forest fire near Lac la Hache

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a new wildfire about 40 kilometres southwest of Lac La Hache.

The fire was discovered on June 23 and is estimated to be eight hectares in size. It was classified as being ‘out of control’ as of 7:30 p.m. on June 23.

This wildfire does not pose an immediate threat to public safety or homes at this time. This fire is burning in close proximity to provincial transmission lines, and authorities have been notified. This fire is also approximately five kilometres away from Esketem’c First Nation Territory, and members of the Esketem’c First Nation have been engaged.

Airtankers, 25 firefighters and two helicopters are on site. Heavy equipment is en route. The cause of this fire is unknown at this time.

The BC Wildfire Service strongly urges members of the public to stay well away from the area where this wildfire is burning, since their presence could put the safety of firefighting crews and others at risk. Public access to a wildfire site is not allowed during fire suppression operations, under the provisions of the Wildfire Act and WorkSafeBC regulations.
