Open burning planned for Frenkel Road area

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations plans to conduct a series of open burns in part of the Prince George Fire Zone to reduce wildfire threats.

This burn project will cover about 3.8 hectares north of Frenkel Road. The debris burning is scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, and will continue periodically until Oct. 31, 2017.

Smoke and flames may be visible from Highway 16 West, Blackwater Road and Frenkel Road.

The goal of this project is to mitigate wildfire hazards and reduce the threat of interface wildfires in this area, by removing lower tree branches (ladder fuels) and accumulations of forest fuels on the ground.

The exact timing of these burns will depend on weather, site conditions and crew availability. They will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation and low-to-moderate fire intensity. Once the debris piles are ignited, the intention is to extinguish them within 24 hours.

Trained BC Wildfire Service crews will carefully control and monitor the fires at all times.
